The northern part of Poland, stretching to the Baltic Sea, consists almost entirely of lowlands, while the Carpathian Mountains (including the Tatra mountains) form the northern border. The Mazury is the largest of the lakes region and visited Poland.
Poland has a thousand year history. In the sixteenth century it was one of the most powerful countries in Europe. Winning the battle of Vienna in 1683, King John III Sobieski of Poland broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, eliminating the threat of a possible occupation of western Europe.
Poland is a country rich in natural mineral resources, including iron, zinc, copper and rock salt. The Wieliczka salt mine, constructed in the thirteenth century, form a real underground city, with a hospital, theater, church and bars! Everything is made of salt: the stairs to chandeliers.
The current constitution of Poland dates back to 1997. The president is elected by popular vote for five years. The 460 members of the lower house of parliament (the Sejm) and the 100 Senate members are directly elected by a system of proportional representation and shall hold office for four years.Among traditional culinary specialties of Poland are reported beet soup, the cabbage rolls (stuffed cabbage leaves with meat and rice) and pierogi (sort of ravioli, for example, cabbage and mushrooms).
Between the Polish celebrities we can mention the astronomer Copernicus, the composer Chopin, the scientist Marie Curie-Sklodowska, filmmakers Roman Polanski and Krzysztof Kieslowski, Pope John Paul II.
